Last week, Qualcomm quietly launched the Snapdragon 6s Gen 3 chipset, and we had our suspicions about it since it looked very similar to the Snapdragon 695 from 2021.
It turns out we were right. Qualcomm confirmed to Android Authority that “the Snapdragon 6s Gen 3 is an enhanced version of the Snapdragon 695, delivering improved CPU, GPU, and AI performances.” Leaving the typo in their statement aside, this means that, aside from the CPU clock speed bump we mentioned in our launch article, Qualcomm has also upgraded the GPU and AI capabilities, although they haven’t provided further details on those improvements.
That’s all well and good, but rebranding a three-year-old chipset under a new name is only going to add to the confusion caused by their already convoluted naming scheme.
Here’s a tip that seems to hold true for now: the “s” version is the weakest, the ‘normal’ number chip is better, and the “+” version is the best. We can’t guarantee how long this mental shortcut will be reliable, but for now, it works. So, when you see a device sporting the Snapdragon 6s Gen 3, just remember it’s essentially a Snapdragon 695 in disguise.
Snapdragon 6s Gen 3 Specs
Qualcomm continues to push the boundaries of mobile technology with the introduction of the Snapdragon 6 Gen 3. Positioned as a powerful yet cost-effective solution, this chipset is designed to deliver impressive performance and advanced features typically reserved for high-end devices. Here, we delve into the specifications and capabilities that make the Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 a standout in the mid-range market.
CPU and GPU
At the heart of the Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 is an octa-core CPU configuration, combining four high-performance Cortex-A78 cores and four efficiency-focused Cortex-A55 cores. This setup ensures a balance between power and efficiency, making it suitable for both demanding applications and everyday tasks. The chipset operates at a clock speed of up to 2.4 GHz, providing ample power for multitasking and smooth operation.
Accompanying the CPU is the Adreno 620 GPU, which promises a significant boost in graphical performance compared to its predecessor. This improvement enhances the gaming experience, enabling higher frame rates and more detailed visuals in mobile games. The GPU also supports Vulkan 1.1, OpenGL ES 3.2, and other modern graphics APIs, ensuring compatibility with the latest gaming titles and applications.
AI and Machine Learning
The Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 features the Hexagon 770 AI processor, offering enhanced artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) capabilities. With up to 7 TOPS (trillions of operations per second) of AI performance, this chipset can handle a wide range of AI-driven tasks, from real-time language translation and advanced photography enhancements to intelligent battery management and predictive text input.
Camera and Imaging
Photography enthusiasts will appreciate the Snapdragon 6 Gen 3’s Spectra 355L image signal processor (ISP). This ISP supports triple camera setups with up to 25 MP resolution each, allowing for versatile camera configurations. It also includes features such as 4K HDR video recording, improved low-light performance, and multi-frame noise reduction. These capabilities ensure stunning photos and videos, even in challenging lighting conditions.
Connectivity
Connectivity is a key focus for the Snapdragon 6 Gen 3. It includes an integrated Snapdragon X62 5G modem, which supports both mmWave and sub-6 GHz 5G bands. This modem ensures fast and reliable 5G connectivity, enabling download speeds of up to 4.4 Gbps. Additionally, the chipset supports Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2, providing robust wireless connectivity options for a seamless user experience.
Battery and Efficiency
Qualcomm has also prioritized power efficiency in the Snapdragon 6 Gen 3. The chipset is built on a 7nm process, which reduces power consumption and heat generation. This efficiency, combined with advanced power management features, translates to longer battery life and cooler device operation, even under heavy usage.
Security
Security features are also robust in the Snapdragon 6 Gen 3, with the Qualcomm Secure Processing Unit (SPU) providing hardware-based security for sensitive data and transactions. This ensures that user information remains protected against potential threats.
The Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 sets a new standard for mid-range mobile performance, offering a compelling blend of power, efficiency, and advanced features. Its robust CPU and GPU performance, AI capabilities, impressive camera support, and comprehensive connectivity options make it an ideal choice for device manufacturers aiming to deliver premium experiences in more affordable devices. As smartphones continue to evolve, the Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 stands out as a key driver of innovation and performance in the mid-range market.
