Roblox has officially rolled out its new Roblox Kids accounts and Roblox Select accounts worldwide, introducing age-based experiences designed to better align games, communication features, and parental controls with a user’s age and developmental stage.
The launch marks one of Roblox’s most significant safety updates in recent years, aiming to give children more appropriate access to online experiences while helping parents stay informed and involved as their children grow.
Roblox Wants Accounts to Grow With Users
According to Roblox, users are automatically assigned to the appropriate account type based on their age.
The new system introduces three account categories:
| Account Type | Intended Age Group |
|---|---|
| Roblox Kids | Younger children |
| Roblox Select | Older children and younger teens |
| Roblox | Users aged 16 and above |
The platform says the goal is to gradually increase digital independence while maintaining safeguards that evolve alongside a child’s maturity level.
For younger users, safety measures are stricter by default. Chat remains disabled for Roblox Kids accounts, while Select accounts provide limited access that expands gradually with age and parental permissions.
Additional Reviews for Games Aimed at Younger Users
The rollout also introduces additional review processes for games that wish to be included in the Roblox Kids and Roblox Select catalogs.
Before developers can publish experiences for younger audiences, they must:
- Complete ID verification
- Enable two-factor authentication
- Purchase a Roblox subscription or pay a refundable publishing fee
Games then undergo additional evaluations that assess gameplay content, moderation reports, and age appropriateness before becoming available to younger users.
Roblox also excludes certain content from Kids and Select catalogs, including:
- Social hangout experiences
- Free-form drawing features
- Content involving sensitive topics
At launch, Roblox Moments and social media link sharing are also restricted for younger accounts. Social media links can only be viewed or shared by age-verified users aged 16 and older.
Chat Access Now Depends on Age Verification
One of the biggest changes involves communication features.
Roblox says users who have not completed an age verification process will not be able to access chat features, regardless of their declared age.
For verified users:
- Ages 5–8 are placed into Roblox Kids accounts with chat disabled by default
- Ages 9–15 enter Roblox Select accounts with gradually expanding chat access
- Ages 16 and above receive standard Roblox accounts with chat enabled
Parents can modify certain chat settings for younger users through Roblox’s parental controls system.
The company also notes that text filtering, chat rephrasing tools, and monitoring systems remain active to help keep interactions age-appropriate and identify harmful behavior.
Expanded Parental Controls
Roblox is expanding parental oversight features alongside the new account categories.
Parents who link their accounts to their children’s profiles can:
- Review friend lists
- Approve or decline Trusted Friend requests
- Block or report users
- Set screen-time limits
- Establish spending limits
- Manage chat permissions
- Allow or block specific games
These controls vary depending on the child’s age, gradually shifting more independence to teens while still giving parents visibility into activity and spending.
Dr. Anuradha Rao, a member of Roblox’s Global Parent Council, said the new tools provide additional opportunities for parental involvement while helping families build healthier digital habits through communication and shared oversight.
A Shift Toward Age-Based Online Experiences
The introduction of Roblox Kids and Select accounts reflects a broader trend across the technology industry toward age-appropriate online experiences and stronger parental participation.
As platforms continue balancing creativity, social interaction, and safety, age-based controls are increasingly becoming a standard part of how younger users engage with digital spaces.
For Roblox, the goal appears straightforward: allow children to explore, create, and connect online while adding layers of protection that evolve as they grow.
