After years in the corporate world and now building Eelos, Gian Yap believes modern life no longer fits neatly into fixed routines — and the products people rely on should move with them.
A day rarely stays exactly as planned. A morning might begin with training before work, continue through back-to-back meetings and errands, and end with dinner with friends. Somewhere in between, traffic changes the schedule, a meeting runs long, or the weather suddenly turns. What begins as one kind of day often becomes something else entirely.
For Eelos founder Gian Yap, this is exactly what it means to live a life in motion. It is less about constantly being busy and more about how different parts of people’s lives increasingly exist within the same day. According to a McKinsey & Company report on hybrid work, work, fitness, travel, relationships, and personal pursuits no longer sit neatly in separate schedules — they overlap. The things people carry should be able to keep up.
Designing for Real Life
Long before Eelos existed, Yap was already living the kind of life that would eventually shape the brand. During his years in the corporate world, his days rarely began and ended at the office. Work meant moving between meetings, fitting in a workout, and grabbing dinner with friends afterward. The things he needed in the morning weren’t always the same things he needed later in the day.
“Working in corporate made me realize how much can happen within a single day,” Yap says. “You leave home with a plan from morning until night, and sometimes the day doesn’t follow it at all. You might have a sudden meeting, training, dinner, errands, or something completely unexpected in between. I started thinking about how the things we use should be able to move with that kind of life.”

Living in the Philippines added another layer to that reality. Weather changes without warning. Traffic turns a short trip into a much longer one. A straightforward morning can look completely different by the afternoon. According to Statista’s Philippine E-Commerce and Consumer Behavior Report, Filipino consumers increasingly value products that adapt to multi-functional, on-the-go lifestyles. Rather than viewing daily unpredictability as inconvenience, Yap saw it as part of something bigger: life had become more fluid, while many everyday products were still designed around fixed occasions and predictable routines.
That realization became the foundation of Eelos. Inspired by the Filipino word kilos — meaning movement — the brand was built around the philosophy of intentional movement. Every product is designed to enable movement rather than simply become another accessory. As Forbes notes in its coverage of purpose-driven brands, consumers increasingly gravitate toward brands built around a clear and authentic philosophy — not just products.
Designing With Intention
That philosophy now shapes how Yap approaches every product at Eelos. Rather than starting with what else can be added, he begins by looking at how people actually move through their lives. For him, thoughtful design is less about having more features and more about understanding which details genuinely make everyday movement easier.
“Every feature has to earn its place,” Yap says. “I always come back to the same question: does this make it easier for someone to move through their day?”
This approach aligns with what leading design authorities like IDEO and Dezeen have long championed — that the best design solves real human problems rather than adding complexity. Furthermore, that approach takes on added relevance in the Philippines, where even a well-planned day can change quickly. A product designed for only one moment risks becoming another thing a person has to manage rather than something that quietly supports the whole journey.
The Eelos Product Line: Built to Move With You
The Eelos Duffel was created to work across different parts of the day rather than for one specific occasion. Its carrying capacity accommodates what someone might need from morning until night. Its water-resistant material offers added protection when the weather changes. Moreover, its clean, minimal form allows it to transition naturally between work, training, travel, and social settings.

Water resistance is increasingly a non-negotiable feature in everyday carry gear. Wirecutter’s guide to the best everyday bags highlights weather protection and multi-use versatility as the top factors consumers prioritize in a reliable daily bag.
The Eelos Rollover Rucksack is a water-resistant vegan leather backpack with dedicated laptop and tablet compartments, expandable side pockets, and a luggage sleeve designed to make airport navigation easier. The rise of vegan leather as a premium material choice is well documented — Business Insider reports that the global vegan leather market is projected to grow significantly through 2030, driven by consumer demand for sustainable and stylish alternatives. For Yap, these details don’t exist to create a longer list of specifications — they exist to remove small points of friction from everyday life.
A New Chapter for Local Brands
As more Filipino brands gain recognition globally, Yap believes the country’s opportunity lies in creating products informed by local realities. According to the World Bank’s Philippine Economic Update, the Philippines’ growing middle class and rising consumer spending are creating strong domestic demand for locally made, quality lifestyle products.
“We understand how Filipinos live because we live it ourselves,” Yap says. “We know what it’s like to adapt, to work through unpredictable weather, and to make the most of every day. Those experiences give us something unique to contribute.”
For Yap, being local doesn’t mean thinking small. CNN Travel’s feature on emerging Southeast Asian lifestyle brandshighlights how regional brands rooted in authentic local experiences are increasingly resonating with global consumers — proof that starting from a distinctly Filipino perspective can lead to a much bigger audience.
Additionally, it means proving that Filipino brands can build with the same confidence and quality as any global brand. Eelos is still at the beginning of that journey. But its ambition reflects the same philosophy that started it: build around how people actually live, create with intention, and keep moving as life evolves.
