In recent weeks, there’s been plenty of buzz around Samsung’s upcoming tri-fold smartphone, which will compete directly with Huawei’s Mate XT. Yesterday, during its Unpacked event, where the Galaxy S25, Galaxy S25+, and Galaxy S25 Ultra were unveiled (and the Galaxy S25 Edge was teased), Samsung effectively confirmed its plans to release this device.
The announcement was brief—during the presentation, images of the tri-fold phone flashed on-screen for just a few seconds, giving a clear glimpse of the foldable design. This was part of Samsung’s future lineup, alongside the Project Moohan XR headset and an unannounced pair of smart glasses.
Recent rumors suggest that Samsung’s first tri-fold smartphone will have a limited production run of just 200,000 units, with an expected release in the third quarter of the year, likely between July and September. This timing fits with Samsung’s usual foldable device release schedule, which in 2024 took place in July.
Samsung Display has already shown off two tri-fold screen concepts: one folding into a Z shape, similar to the Mate XT, and another with a G fold design, which keeps the screen entirely protected when the phone is fully folded.
The outline shown during Samsung’s Unpacked event seems to follow the Z-style fold, like the Mate XT, so it’s likely this version will debut first. There’s still a lot to be revealed, but one thing is certain: this will be Samsung’s most expensive foldable device yet. Given the complexity of the design and limited production run, it’s safe to say that the price tag will reflect the high-end nature of this new device.
