The initial launch of Apple Intelligence didn’t offer much in terms of AI-driven image generation, but that’s about to change with iOS 18.2. The upcoming update will introduce exciting new features like Image Playground, Genmoji, and Image Wand, bringing powerful image creation tools to Apple devices.
Here’s everything you need to know about these innovative additions.
Image Playground, an app and a tool for apps
Image Playground is a new tool on your iPhone for creating original images, and it’s arriving with iOS 18.2. It will be available in two ways: as a standalone app and through integrated tools within existing apps, including third-party ones. No matter where you access it, the experience will be similar.
You’ll simply type in a description or concept, and Apple Intelligence will generate a brand-new image based on your input. Whether you have a clear idea or just a suggestion, it’s a quick and easy way to bring your vision to life.
Alternatively, you can create your image step by step by following a series of prompts. Image Playground will guide you with options like themes, places, accessories, costumes, and more. You’ll also be able to choose from three image styles: Animation, Illustration, and Sketch. Note that Sketch isn’t available in the iOS 18.2 beta yet, so Apple may release it in a future update.
Apple is keeping the styles limited to these three to avoid the possibility of creating realistic deepfakes. Everything you create with Image Playground will have a playful, animated feel. As you input your ideas, Apple Intelligence will generate multiple preview options for you to choose from, giving you room to refine and personalize your image.
Image Playground will integrate into apps like Messages, Keynote, Pages, and Freeform. Third-party apps can also use an API to bring this feature into their own platforms. If your favorite app doesn’t support it, don’t worry—the standalone Image Playground app will let you create images to share anywhere.
Genmoji, the future of emoji
When iOS 18.2 drops, Apple Intelligence will not only be able to create original images but also original emoji. Apple calls these Genmoji, and they seamlessly integrate into the emoji keyboard, making them available for use across all your favorite apps.
With iOS 18.2, all you need to do is type in the search field of the emoji keyboard, and if there isn’t a matching emoji yet, Apple will suggest a “Create New Emoji” option. Just type in your description, and Apple Intelligence will instantly generate up to four new emoji. You can swipe through the options to pick your favorite, and Apple will add it directly to your emoji keyboard.
If you’re messaging a friend, you’ll even have the option to create a Genmoji that looks just like them. Imagine turning your friends or family into superheroes (or supervillains) in seconds!
Genmoji will be available wherever emoji are used—so you can send them as tapbacks in Messages, share them on social media, and more.
Image Wand, your Apple Pencil’s secret weapon
The third and final image tool coming with iOS 18.2 is exclusive to iPadOS and is called the Image Wand. Available inside Apple Notes on iPad, the Image Wand turns your Apple Pencil (or even your finger) into a powerful tool for creating new images effortlessly.
The Image Wand lives right in your Notes tool palette, allowing you to circle an existing sketch and transform it into a polished, original image. If you’re starting from scratch, you can simply circle an empty space in your note, and the Image Wand will analyze the surrounding context to suggest a relevant image.
Whether you’re a seasoned creative or just getting started, Image Wand uses AI to make your notes more visually engaging and dynamic than ever before.
Image Tools in iOS 18.2: Wrap-up
Apple Intelligence’s new Image Tools in iOS 18.2 will spark a lot of creativity and fun when they launch. Unlike some competing AI image generation tools, Apple limits the available image styles to prevent misuse or abuse.
