Apple has announced that iOS 18 will be released on September 16, just one week from today. This update will roll out to all supported iPhones and will be preinstalled on the new iPhone 16 series, which launches on September 20. No multi-week rollout here—Apple’s keeping it straightforward.
However, Apple Intelligence won’t be part of iOS 18. Instead, the first batch of these features will come with iOS 18.1, arriving in October. Initially available only in US English, Apple plans to expand to other English-speaking regions in December, with additional languages like Chinese, French, Japanese, and Spanish set to follow next year.
So, what AI features can you expect in October? Here’s a rundown:
- Writing Tools: Enhanced capabilities for drafting and editing text.
- Movie Creation: Generate movies from descriptions using the Memories feature in Photos.
- Photo Search: Find specific photos using natural language queries.
- Video Search: Locate specific moments in your videos.
- Clean Up: Remove unwanted objects or people from your photos.
- Audio Handling: Record, transcribe, and summarize audio in the Notes and Phone apps.
- Summarized Notifications: Get concise summaries of notifications.
- Priority Messages: Highlight important emails in Mail.
- Email Summaries: Receive summaries of your emails.
- Smart Reply: Suggested quick responses for emails.
- Redesigned Siri: Now supports typing and offers more natural and flexible interactions. Siri will also be able to answer a wide range of questions about Apple device features and settings.
Later this year and into the next, you’ll see some exciting AI updates. Here’s what’s coming:
- Image Playground: Create images and emojis with ease.
- Image Wand: Turn your sketches into images.
- Personalized Siri: Siri will use your personal context to offer tailored responses and actions. It’ll also have onscreen awareness and be able to interact with hundreds of new actions in both Apple and third-party apps.
And yes, ChatGPT will be part of this new wave of features too.
Apple Intelligence will be available exclusively on the new iPhone 16 lineup, the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPads and Macs with M1 or newer chips.
