AMD today announced a range of new CPU models during its CES 2025 presentation. The company also gave a brief preview of its upcoming desktop graphics and the next generation of FSR image upscaling.
New Processors for Desktops, Laptops, and Handheld Gaming PCs
AMD introduced two new Ryzen 9000 series desktop processors: the Ryzen 9 9950X3D and the Ryzen 9 9900X3D. AMD has upgraded the 9950X and 9900X, incorporating its 3D V-cache technology to boost gaming performance with a significantly larger cache.
Compared to the previous generation 7950X3D, the Ryzen 9 9950X3D offers, on average, 8% better gaming performance and is 20% faster than Intel’s Core Ultra 9 285K. Its performance is similar to the 9800X3D, so if additional cores aren’t necessary for productivity tasks, the 9800X3D may be a better choice for gaming.
Updates for Handheld Gaming PCs
AMD also updated its Ryzen Z series of chips, which power handheld gaming PCs like the ASUS ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go. The new top-tier model, the Ryzen Z2 Extreme, features 8 cores, combining Zen 5 and Zen 5c cores, as well as an updated RDNA 3.5 GPU with 16 graphics cores. Below that, the Ryzen Z2 offers 8 Zen 4 cores and 12 RDNA 3 graphics cores, while the Ryzen Z2 Go is a lower-end model with 4 Zen 3+ cores and an RDNA 2 GPU with 12 graphics cores. It’s worth noting the significant differences between these models despite sharing the same Z2 branding.
High-Performance Ryzen 9000HX Series for Gaming Laptops
AMD also announced three new Ryzen 9000HX Series processors for high-performance gaming laptops. These include the Ryzen 9 9955HX3D, which is the only model in the series to feature 3D V-cache, alongside the 9955HX (16-core, no V-cache) and the 9850HX (12-core).
Expansive Range of New Mobile Chips
Additionally, AMD revealed a large number of new mobile chips, including the Ryzen AI Max, Ryzen AI Max PRO, Ryzen AI 300, Ryzen AI 300 PRO, as well as the Ryzen 200 and Ryzen 200 PRO series. Details for these chips were not fully disclosed.
Upcoming RDNA 4 Radeon Graphics
AMD teased its upcoming RDNA 4-based Radeon 9000 series graphics cards, including the Radeon 9070XT and Radeon 9070, expected to launch in Q1 2025. These cards will compete with Nvidia’s RTX 5070 and RTX 5070 Ti, which Nvidia is expected to announce later today during its CES keynote.
FSR4 Technology Powered by Machine Learning
Finally, AMD previewed its next-generation FSR4 (FidelityFX Super Resolution 4) technology, powered by machine learning, similar to Nvidia’s DLSS and Intel’s XeSS. AMD will develop FSR4 specifically for its RDNA 4-based graphics processors, though it shared no additional details.
