MediaTek is set to enhance its processors with support for Gemini Nano, starting with the upcoming Dimensity 9400, which is launching soon. Over the past few months, Gemini Nano has gradually reached more OEMs and developers, bringing its multimodal AI capabilities to various devices. This allows Google’s Generative AI to operate effectively on a smaller scale, benefiting the Pixel series and beyond.
MediaTek announced today that the Dimensity 9400 will optimize support for Gemini Nano, featuring exciting new multimodal capabilities. This update applies not only to the new SoC; MediaTek also mentioned that other “Generative AI-enabled chipsets” will join this expansion.
Gemini Nano’s multimodality first appeared on the Pixel 9 series, powered by Google’s Tensor G4 chipset, where it enhances features like Pixel Recorder. With today’s announcement, MediaTek is taking the first step to broaden the reach of this innovative technology, although details on which devices will support it are still under wraps.
From MediaTek’s announcement, it seems the Dimensity 9400 won’t be the only chip to support Gemini Nano. This likely means that existing MediaTek chips, as well as future ones, will also be compatible. For example, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 series, which uses the MediaTek 9300+ chipset, may be able to leverage Gemini Nano with Multimodality down the line.
The company highlights that adopting this multimodal approach will enable exciting new features, such as generating detailed text descriptions of photos taken with your phone.
MediaTek will share more information about the Dimensity 9400 SoC, beyond its Gemini Nano optimization, soon, as the chip launches later this month. MediaTek made a significant push towards AI last year, and it looks like this year will continue in the same vein.
