The Google Home Gemini Extension has officially rolled out to all users, moving beyond its previous preview or beta phase. Now available for both iOS and Android users with the Gemini app, this highly anticipated feature offers a more intuitive and natural way to control your smart home devices.

Powered by generative AI, the Gemini Extension allows you to manage smart home devices like lights, thermostats, switches, vacuums, fans, and other connected gadgets. Once activated, it provides the convenience of controlling these devices directly from your phone’s lock screen without having to unlock your phone. For more sensitive devices, such as smart locks or security cameras, the app will guide you to the Google Home app for secure monitoring and control.
In addition to smart home devices, the Gemini Extension also enhances the management of media devices. You can adjust volume levels, pause entertainment, or even power down your TV with simple voice commands. It also enables users to broadcast messages to devices throughout the house and trigger automations or routines, which adds an extra layer of convenience.
A key feature of the Gemini Extension is its conversational interface. Unlike traditional voice commands that require stopping and starting, this integration allows you to adjust your request as you go. For instance, if you ask Gemini to turn off all the lights, you can then seamlessly interrupt and specify dimming a particular light without breaking the flow of the conversation, making the experience more natural.
To activate the extension, go to your profile in the Gemini app, tap on Extensions, and then select Device Control. From there, you’ll see the option to toggle on Google Home and connect your devices. Once connected, you can start using this smart, conversational tool to control your home effortlessly.
