Following the recent Live update, Gemini has started rolling out a floating overlay panel on Android, easily recognizable by a new glowing effect.
When you activate Gemini, you’ll see a subtle glow around the panel. Besides being visually appealing (and reminiscent of the 2019 Google Assistant design), this glow signals that you’ve got Gemini’s latest contextual overlay.
First announced at I/O 2024 in May, Gemini’s responses now appear in a floating panel that can expand, rather than taking up the entire screen. This design is less disruptive and helps you maintain context while you work. It also integrates seamlessly with Gemini’s image generation feature, allowing you to drag and drop images directly into apps like Gmail or Google Messages.
With this update, you’ll now see an “Ask about this video” chip—replacing the usual “Ask about this screen” option—when you activate Gemini on a YouTube video. This lets you ask Gemini to summarize the video or answer follow-up questions.
However, the floating overlay with the new glow animation isn’t widely available yet. It’s rolling out more slowly than Gemini Live. We’ve spotted it on our Pixel 8 Pro and have heard similar reports from other users.
On Tuesday, Google announced that the feature would roll out to both Gemini users an Advanced subscribers on Android in the coming weeks.
