Streaming platforms like Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, and Apple TV+ have already embraced the HDR10+ standard, offering content with enhanced picture quality. Now, Disney+ will join the ranks and soon offer support for this high dynamic range format, delivering even more stunning visuals to its content.
HDR10+ video coming to Disney+
At CES 2025, Marc Finer from Communication Research Inc. shared exciting news on behalf of the group behind HDR10+ technology. He announced that Disney+ will soon offer HDR10+ content, allowing owners of compatible devices to enjoy movies and shows with enhanced contrast and brightness for a more immersive viewing experience.
For those new to the technology, HDR10+ is a high dynamic range video format that competes with Dolby Vision. Both technologies use HDR metadata for each frame, enabling displays to adjust settings in real time for richer contrast and brighter images.
According to MediaPlayNews, “HDR10+ dynamic metadata offers several advantages, including enhanced brightness and contrast, strong standardization, easy implementation, global certification, and no licensing fees.” This technology, developed in partnership with Samsung and Panasonic, is now supported by over 13,000 compatible devices, including the latest Apple TV 4K.
While the announcement is exciting, Disney+ has yet to provide details on when the first HDR10+ content will be available. To enjoy the benefits of HDR10+, you’ll need a compatible device that supports the technology.
