The Samsung 990 EVO Plus SSD has officially arrived, boasting faster speeds than its predecessor released in January. Plus, it now comes with a higher capacity option for those who need more than 2TB of storage.
The SSD supports both PCIe 4.0 x4 and 5.0 x2 interfaces and is built on a cutting-edge 5nm controller. It features the latest NAND technology with TLC chips and a nickel-coated heat shield for better thermal management.
Samsung claims it’s 73% more power efficient compared to the regular 990 EVO SSD. Plus, the 4TB variant delivers outstanding random-access performance, making it a top choice for demanding tasks.
It delivers impressive performance with 1,050K IOPS for input and 1,400 IOPS for output. When it comes to sequential access, it reaches speeds of 7,250MB/s for reading and 6,300MB/s for writing. In simple terms, it’s about 50% faster than the base Samsung 990 EVO SSD.
For context, the original model tops out at 700K IOPS for input and 800K IOPS for output, with sequential speeds of 5,000MB/s for reading and 4,200MB/s for writing.
It’s worth noting that the EVO SSDs don’t include on-board DRAM; instead, they use the host RAM. However, Samsung asserts that the EVO Plus nearly matches the performance of SSDs that do have DRAM.
The Samsung 990 EVO Plus optimizes performance for gaming, business, and creative tasks, and it comes in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB configurations. Keep in mind that the lower-capacity options have slightly reduced random access and sequential speeds, but the differences are minimal.
We’ll wrap up with a specs table and pricing details below. What do you think of the new Samsung 990 EVO Plus SSD?
