After launching for Advanced subscribers last month, Google is now rolling out Gemini Live to free users on Android.
Gemini Live lets you have more natural, dynamic conversations, allowing back-and-forth exchanges where you can even interrupt responses with new info or directions, making it feel more like a real conversation.
You can access Gemini Live through a new circular waveform icon with a sparkle in the bottom-right corner of the Gemini overlay or the full app. Tapping it brings up a full-screen interface with ‘Hold’ and ‘End’ buttons at the bottom. You can leave this screen to keep using your phone or lock it, and Gemini Live will keep running in the background. There’s also a notification that lets you end the session, or you can just say ‘stop.’
Once a conversation ends, you’ll see a text transcript of your prompts and Gemini’s responses in the history section, just like any other chat. You can easily revisit or restart the conversation from there.
As of now, Gemini Live doesn’t support Extensions to access apps like Gmail or YouTube Music, but that feature is expected to arrive in the future.
Gemini Live introduces 10 new voices, which are also available across the rest of Gemini. You can try them out by going to Gemini settings > Gemini’s voice:
- Nova: Calm, mid-range voice
- Ursa: Engaged, mid-range voice
- Vega: Bright, higher voice
- Pegasus: Engaged, deeper voice
- Orbit: Energetic, deeper voice
- Lyra: Bright, higher voice
- Orion: Bright, deeper voice
- Dipper: Engaged, deeper voice
- Eclipse: Energetic, mid-range voice
- Capella: British accent, higher voice
After giving priority access to Gemini Advanced subscribers last month, Google is now rolling out Gemini Live to free users. It’s available today for Android devices set to English, with more language options coming soon.
