Google is deep in the AI race with its Gemini project, but CEO Sundar Pichai believes AI will also play a big role in how Google Search delivers information.
“As AI expands the kinds of questions people can ask, 2025 is shaping up to be one of the biggest years for search innovation yet,” Pichai said during Google’s earnings call on February 4.
Gemini integrates to Google Search
Google’s plan is to integrate AI into Search, gradually turning it into a smarter assistant that scans the web for you, analyzes pages, and delivers more detailed answers—moving beyond just showing 10 blue links.
You might be wondering if this means Search and Gemini will start overlapping since Gemini can also handle search queries. But the idea behind bringing AI into Google Search is to improve traffic and support businesses—especially when it comes to ads.
Pichai also shared that Google is exploring different ways to integrate AI into Search, leveraging Project Astra and Gemini Deep Research to enhance its capabilities. Gemini Deep Research, in particular, seems like a better fit, as it could make Google Search a more powerful tool for research and in-depth queries.
“You’re expanding the kinds of questions Search can handle—things that don’t always have instant answers and take more time to process,” Pichai explained. “These are areas we’re actively exploring, and you’ll see us rolling out new user experiences throughout 2025.”
Google is feeling the pressure to improve Search, especially as ChatGPT has grown into one of the internet’s most popular tools—posing a real threat to Google’s core business.
The push to add AI hasn’t been smooth sailing, though. When Google rolled out AI Overviews, it made headlines for some bizarre mistakes, like telling people to eat rocks or put glue on their pizza. But despite the setbacks, Google is doubling down on AI, seeing it as a necessary upgrade to keep Search ahead.
