The adoption of Generative AI (GenAI) tools in businesses has exploded. In fact, Generative AI traffic surged by a staggering 890% in 2024. However, this rapid growth comes with a serious warning. A new report from Palo Alto Networks explains the risks. According to their State of GenAI 2025 report, unsanctioned usage and new threats have rapidly expanded the attack surface.
This widespread adoption is outpacing many organizations. Specifically, their ability to implement appropriate security controls is falling behind. The report found that organizations now manage an average of 66 GenAI applications. Worryingly, 10% of these are classified as high-risk.
The GenAI Boom in the Philippines
In the Philippines, Generative AI is a transformative force. The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) plans to invest over ₱2.6 billion in AI projects by 2028. These projects will target critical sectors like healthcare and mobility. This push for innovation is mirrored in the workplace. The report identified the top three GenAI tools used by Filipinos:
- Grammarly (46.21%)
- Microsoft PowerApps (33.32%)
- Microsoft 356 Copilot (13.97%)
The Hidden Dangers: Key Risks Uncovered
While the productivity benefits are clear, the report on Generative AI security highlights several critical risks.
- Rising Data Loss: GenAI-related data loss prevention (DLP) incidents have more than doubled. They now account for 14% of all data security incidents.
- Shadow AI: Unauthorized GenAI use, or “Shadow AI,” has created significant blind spots. As a result, it is difficult for IT teams to control sensitive data.
- Elevated Risks for Critical Sectors: Many high-risk AI models remain susceptible to jailbreak attacks. These can produce unsafe content, including instructions for illegal activities.
Steven Scheurmann of Palo Alto Networks offered a warning. “As GenAI tools become more embedded in enterprise operations in the Philippines, the risk of data exposure and threats grows significantly. It is imperative to create stronger guardrails.”
How Businesses Can Deploy AI Bravely
The report offers best practice recommendations. These tips help businesses safely harness the potential of GenAI:
- Establish Visibility and Control: Gain comprehensive oversight of GenAI app usage and implement access policies.
- Safeguard Sensitive Data: Deploy real-time content inspection to prevent unauthorized data exfiltration.
- Defend Against AI-driven Threats: Implement Zero Trust security architectures to mitigate modern cyberthreats.
Ultimately, Palo Alto Networks is focused on helping organizations safeguard against potential cyber risks. This empowers them to deploy AI bravely.
