The 3rd ASEAN Battery Technology Conference (ABTC) just concluded a successful run. It was held in Phuket, Thailand, from August 27-29, 2025. In total, the event brought together over 340 participants from more than 20 countries. Their primary aim was to build a strong ASEAN Battery Ecosystem. They also launched the new ASEAN Battery Safety Network (ABSN).
Hosted by the Thailand Energy Storage Technology Association (TESTA), the conference served as a pivotal platform for shaping the future of energy storage.
A Push for a Greener, Integrated ASEAN
In his opening speech, Mr. Pongpol Yodmuangcharoen highlighted the region’s focus on clean energy. Specifically, he noted that ASEAN now accelerates EV development. They are building batteries from the cell level up.
“Thailand is proud to collaborate with partners across ASEAN to champion transparency, innovation and circularity,” he stated.
Major Announcements: Safety, Research, and a New Whitepaper
The conference was marked by several significant announcements.
- First, they launched the ASEAN Battery Safety Network (ABSN). This network will set common benchmarks and harmonize best practices for battery safety.
- Second, they released a new collaborative whitepaper. It provides a strategic deep dive into the region’s evolving battery and EV ecosystem.
- Finally, several key partners signed Memorandums of Understanding. These MoUs will reinforce cross-border collaboration on key technologies.
Insights from Global Experts
The event also featured insightful discussions with global experts. For instance, Nobel Laureate Prof. M. Stanley Whittingham gave an honorary plenary speech. Panel discussions covered many prominent topics. These included the future of battery technologies and the role of AI in manufacturing.
Dr. Pimpa Limthongkul, president of TESTA, emphasized the event’s importance. She said, “ABTC 2025 is a platform where ASEAN’s brightest minds come together to shape the future of energy storage.”
Ultimately, the conference has laid the foundation for an integrated regional market. This market can now stand strong in the global arena. The next edition of the ABTC is set to take place in Malaysia.
