Last year, Apple introduced its Journal app with iOS 17.2. However, as I mentioned on 9to5Mac, the app is quite basic compared to other alternatives on the App Store. But a new patent suggests that Apple Intelligence could significantly enhance the Journal app in the future.

Apple’s Journal application and Apple Intelligence

Apple has filed a new patent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) that reveals numerous improvements in the works for its Journal app. The patent illustrations indicate a deep integration with Apple Intelligence to provide smart suggestions.

Currently, the app offers basic suggestions for memories based on photos, music, places you’ve visited, and people you’ve messaged. However, as noted by The Mac Observer, the patent suggests Apple aims to elevate these suggestions using AI.

For example, the system might proactively prompt users to record a memory after finishing a workout or taking multiple photos at the same location. Another illustration shows plans to integrate the Journal app with calendar events and reminders.

The patent also introduces a new timeline interface, allowing users to view daily events in a chat-like format, rather than cards with a cover and small text.

Patent of rumor Journal App by Apple

The Apple’s Journal app is getting some nice upgrades with iOS 18. However, Apple hasn’t mentioned anything about Apple Intelligence yet, likely because the AI features are still in limited preview.

Personally, I’d love to see integration with Apple Intelligence in the app down the road, but I think Apple should prioritize bringing the app to iPad and Mac first.
