Previously, the posts you liked on X were visible to everyone, which sometimes caused issues. Now, the platform, formerly known as Twitter, is making that information private.
According to the X Engineering account, you’ll still be able to see the posts you’ve liked, but others won’t. Authors will keep their like counts and can see who liked their posts, but you won’t be able to view detailed lists of who liked posts from other people.
Elon Musk, the Owner and Executive Chairman of X explained in a post that it’s “important to let people like posts without getting attacked for it.”
However, some creators and paying users are unhappy with the change. They argue that it makes it harder to track engagement and could lead to more platform manipulation through paid likes. On the flip side, making likes private might encourage users to like more posts without the fear of being bullied for their choices.
Making this feature available to everyone might reduce one of the incentives to get a premium subscription. The company’s revenues took a significant hit in 2023, and it tried to recover by introducing a paid tier to offset the lost income.
