Gemini has been part of the Google app since February, but it’s now a standalone app on iPhone. You can now access it directly from your home screen, instead of having to switch tabs in the Google app or use the Search widget shortcut.
The Gemini UI on iOS now mirrors the Android experience, with a clean, minimalist home screen that greets you with a simple ‘Hello,’ much like Google Search. Your ‘Chats & Gems’ history is easily accessible in the top-left corner, and the text field below is simplified to just ‘Ask Gemini.
Google promotes the app as both a study guide and an image generator powered by Imagen 3, with the added feature of letting you take and attach photos to your prompts. Google’s AI Extensions also gives you access to data from YouTube, Google Maps, Gmail, Calendar, and other Google services.
A standout feature of the app is Gemini Live, which has made its way to iPhone after launching on Android in September. It lets you have natural, interactive conversations with Gemini, where you can interrupt, ask questions, add new info, or change topics. Plus, the Live Activity feature lets you chat with Gemini Live while using other apps or even when your iPhone is locked.
It’s great for when you want to practice for an upcoming interview, ask for advice on things to do in a new city, or brainstorm and develop creative ideas.
You can also choose from 10 different voices for Gemini’s responses, which will apply to all your interactions. At launch, the app supports languages like English, Spanish, French, German, Hindi, Portuguese, Arabic, Italian, Indonesian, Japanese, Turkish, and Vietnamese.
The free Google Gemini app is now available in 35 languages worldwide on the App Store. If you prefer, you can still use Gemini through the Google app or the mobile web.
