Did you know the Philippines has a nuclear power plant? Built-in the ‘80s, the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant was left unused after the Chernobyl disaster put a stop to nuclear energy development worldwide. Today, the world is gradually revisiting this renewable energy source. In the Philippines, Samsung has teamed up with Meralco to explore viable pathways for integrating nuclear energy into the country’s power grid.
This week, Meralco announced that it has signed a memorandum of agreement with Samsung C&T Corporation to explore nuclear energy development. However, it’s important to note that this agreement doesn’t guarantee the opening of a nuclear power plant in the Philippines.
Instead, both companies will investigate the potential of incorporating nuclear energy into the country’s power landscape. This includes everything from technical designs to the necessary regulations for setting up a power plant. While there aren’t any concrete plans for a plant yet, Meralco’s Manny Pangilinan assures us that this is a genuine step toward exploring this renewable energy source, according to ABS-CBN.
Samsung C&T Corporation is a construction company that has built iconic landmarks around the globe, including the Burj Khalifa and Taipei 101. They also have experience in developing power plants, which adds to their expertise in this new venture.
However, it may take some time for nuclear power to become a reality in the Philippines. This renewable energy source remains a contentious topic worldwide, with safety concerns frequently raised in discussions.
