A recent report suggests that Samsung might be looking to acquire Nokia’s mobile network infrastructure business. It’s said that the two companies are in talks about Samsung buying Nokia’s mobile network division. If the deal goes through, the company could significantly boost its standing in the global network infrastructure market.
With the acquisition of Nokia’s mobile network business, Samsung could become a major global player
According to a Bloomberg report shared on Yahoo Business, Samsung is considering buying Nokia’s telecom equipment business. Nokia has struggled to keep up with competitors like Ericsson and Huawei in recent years, prompting the company to explore various options with its advisors. These options include selling part or all of its telecom division or even merging with a rival.
Although Nokia hasn’t made a final decision, reports value its telecom equipment business at $10 billion. The company’s electronics division has expressed interest in the acquisition to strengthen its Radio Access Network (RAN) segment, which is crucial for connecting smartphones to the broader telecom infrastructure.
Samsung Networks, a division of Samsung Electronics, is already one of the leading telecom network infrastructure companies globally, but it still lags behind giants like Ericsson and Huawei. If Samsung successfully acquires Nokia’s mobile network business, its RAN market share could jump from 6.1% last year to 25.6%, making the company second-largest RAN supplier in the world.
The company already manufactures 4G and 5G base stations, chipsets, devices, radios, and core equipment. They’ve supplied telecom gear to major providers worldwide, including Telus, O2, Reliance Jio, KDDI, NTT DoCoMo, Dish, Verizon, and Vodafone.
