Apple released the first iOS 18 beta and iPadOS 18 beta earlier this month at WWDC, and today, they’re rolling out the second beta for developers. Public betas are expected next month.
The iOS 18 beta 2 and iPadOS 18 beta 2 introduce support for alternative app stores in the EU, along with alternative payment options in the App Store, a default web browser selection screen, and the ability for browsers to use engines other than Safari’s.
All of these changes are a direct result of the European Commission designating iPadOS as a “gatekeeper platform,” which mandates these features under the EU’s Digital Markets Act. Apple initially introduced these concessions with iOS 17.4 back in March, and now they’re extending them to iPadOS as well.
Meanwhile, iOS 18 beta 2 introduces support for iPhone mirroring on macOS Sequoia beta 2. This feature allows you to control your iPhone entirely from your Mac while keeping the iPhone locked. It was first unveiled at WWDC.
There’s also a new toggle for the RCS protocol that Apple is finally supporting in iOS 18. This will show up if your carrier supports RCS.
iOS 18 Beta 2 is a robust update introducing numerous features to improve user convenience and functionality. The enhancements in messaging, email, web browsing, password management, new AI capabilities, and home screen customization options highlight Apple’s dedication to refining its operating system. Users can expect further refinements and additional features as the development continues, making iOS 18 a highly anticipated update.
