The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) has just announced Bluetooth 6. This latest update brings enhancements in precision tracking and overall security, setting new standards for connectivity.
The update also enhances filtering and efficiency, which helps improve battery life on devices. A new feature, Channel Sounding, measures the distance between two devices with centimeter-level accuracy. It uses phase-based ranging to send radio signals at different frequencies, allowing for precise distance calculation.
Channel Sounding will soon be part of the “Find My Devices” feature, improving location tracking for major tech companies like Apple, Google, and Samsung. It also addresses security concerns by using digital keys to ensure devices unlock only within a specific range.
Details on when Bluetooth 6 will be available in new devices are still to come, but we’ll keep you updated on its release.
What is Bluetooth?
Bluetooth technology allows devices to communicate with each other without cables or wires. Bluetooth relies on short-range radio frequency, and any device that incorporates the technology can communicate as long as it is within the required distance. The technology is often used to allow two different types of devices to communicate with each other. It is an electronics “standard,” which means that manufacturers that want to include this feature have to incorporate specific requirements into their electronic devices. These specifications ensure that the devices can recognize and interact with other devices that use this technology.
